Cable Measurement Note
The maximum cable profile refers to the approximate heating cable width × height.
Cable size may vary depending on model, manufacturer, voltage, wattage and jacket construction. Always measure the actual heating cable before ordering.
Do not force an oversized cable into a smaller clip, as this may damage the clip or heating cable jacket.

Installation
Installation Overview
Roof heat cable clips are designed to secure roof and gutter de-icing cables in the planned installation pattern. Before installation, confirm the heating cable layout, roof condition and selected clip type.
Important: Disconnect the heating cable from power before installation, removal or adjustment.
Before Installing
RC-NF Nail-Free Installation
-
Plan the Cable Layout
Determine the heating cable route along eaves, roof edges, valleys or other ice-prone areas according to the heating cable manufacturer's layout requirements. -
Install the Clip onto the Shingle
Slide the RC-NF clip onto the lower edge of the compatible asphalt shingle. Ensure the clip is fully seated and securely engaged. -
Insert the Heating Cable
Place the roof heating cable into the cable-retaining hook. -
Secure the Cable
Gently close the retaining hook around the heating cable. Do not crush, deform or damage the cable jacket. -
Final Inspection
Confirm that every clip is secure, the cable route is correct and the cable is not under excessive tension.
RC-NG Nail / Glue Installation
RC-NG provides flexible mounting options. Select the installation method according to the roofing material and approved mounting requirements.
Installation Warnings
- Do not install clips on loose, damaged or brittle roofing materials.
- Do not use adhesive, fasteners or sealants that are incompatible with the roof surface.
- Do not crush, cut or puncture the heating cable jacket.
- Do not pull the heating cable tightly between clips.
- Allow adhesive and sealant to cure completely before energizing the system.
- Follow applicable electrical, roofing and building requirements.
FAQ
Product Selection
Which roof heat cable clip should I choose: RC-NF or RC-NG?
Choose RC-NF Nail-Free if you have a compatible asphalt shingle roof and prefer installation without nails, screws or adhesive.
Choose RC-NG Nail / Glue when your project requires flexible mounting options, including approved adhesive, nails, screws or combined installation methods.
What roofs can RC-NF Nail-Free clips be used on?
RC-NF is designed for compatible asphalt shingles, including standard three-tab shingles and certain architectural shingles within the approximately 0.38 in (9.7 mm) grip range.
RC-NF should not be used on metal roofs, slate, tile, cedar shake or membrane roofing systems.
What roofs can RC-NG Nail / Glue clips be used on?
RC-NG can be used on compatible asphalt shingles, metal flashing, membrane roofing, wood surfaces and other applications when the selected adhesive or fastening method is approved for the specific roofing material.
Cable Compatibility
What size heating cable fits these roof cable clips?
Both RC-NF and RC-NG support heating cable profiles up to: 0.55 × 0.31 in (14 × 8 mm).
Always measure the actual cable width and height before ordering.
Do these clips fit all roof heating cable brands?
Compatibility depends on cable dimensions, not brand names.
These clips are designed for many full-size self-regulating roof heating cables when the actual cable profile matches the specification.
Can these clips be used with constant-wattage heating cable?
They may be suitable when the cable profile is within the stated size range and the cable manufacturer permits this mounting method.
Quantity & Installation
How many roof cable clips do I need?
Calculate clip quantity based on the roof-edge length where the heating cable is mounted, not the total heating cable length.
| RC-NG Nail / Glue | Approximately 20 clips per 10 ft of roof edge |
| RC-NF Nail-Free | Approximately 10 clips per 7.5 ft of roof edge |
Actual requirements depend on roof geometry, valleys, dormers, corners and the heating cable manufacturer's spacing recommendations.
Are nails, screws or adhesive included?
No. The package includes only the selected quantity of aluminum roof cable clips.
Heating cable, nails, screws, adhesive, roofing sealant and installation tools are not included.
Can these clips be used inside gutters or downspouts?
These products are designed for roof-surface cable mounting.
Use proper gutter spacers and downspout hangers where the heating cable enters drainage areas.
Safety Questions
Do these clips prevent ice dams by themselves?
No. The clips only secure the heating cable position.
A properly selected, installed and controlled roof de-icing system helps maintain meltwater drainage paths and reduce ice-related problems.
Can homeowners install these roof cable clips?
Yes. RC-NF is suitable for compatible asphalt shingle DIY projects, while RC-NG provides additional flexibility for homeowners, roofers and contractors.
Anyone working at roof height should use proper safety procedures or hire a qualified professional.
Guides
Guide 1: Choose the Right Clip
Selecting the correct roof heat cable clip depends on your roofing material, heating cable size and required mounting method.
RC-NF vs RC-NG Selection Guide
| Question | Recommended Choice |
|---|---|
| Do you want installation without nails, screws or adhesive? | Choose RC-NF Nail-Free for compatible asphalt shingle roofs. |
| Does your roof require adhesive or fastened mounting? | Choose RC-NG Nail / Glue for approved mounting methods. |
| Are you installing on metal, membrane or other non-shingle surfaces? | Use RC-NG with a suitable approved attachment method. |
Guide 2: Estimate the Pack Size
Calculate clip quantity based on the roof-edge sections where the heating cable will be mounted. Do not calculate based on total heating cable length.
| Clip Type | Reference Coverage |
|---|---|
| RC-NG Nail / Glue | Approximately 20 clips per 10 ft of roof edge |
| RC-NF Nail-Free | Approximately 10 clips per 7.5 ft of roof edge |
Planning Note: These coverage values are conservative references only. The heating cable manufacturer's required layout and spacing always take priority.
Guide 3: Choose an Adhesive for RC-NG
When using RC-NG with adhesive mounting, the adhesive must bond to both aluminum and the exact roofing substrate. It should also be rated for outdoor UV exposure, moisture, freeze-thaw cycles and expected service temperatures.
| Roof Surface | Adhesive Guidance |
|---|---|
| Asphalt Shingles | Use an exterior roofing adhesive or adhesive-sealant specifically approved for asphalt and aluminum. SureBond SB-190 Everseal is one example used for roof cable clip applications. |
| Metal Roof or Flashing | Use a high-strength roofing adhesive, adhesive-sealant or bonding product approved for aluminum and the specific metal surface. |
| EPDM / TPO / PVC Membrane | Use only a bonding adhesive or mastic approved by the membrane manufacturer for that exact roofing material. |
| Cedar or Wood | Use an exterior adhesive or adhesive-sealant approved for both wood and aluminum. Approved fasteners with compatible sealant may also be preferred. |
| Slate / Clay Tile / Concrete Tile | Consult the roofing manufacturer or qualified roofer for the correct mounting solution. |
Before Bonding
Important: Adhesive, sealant, nails and screws are not included with the clips. Always use products approved for the specific roofing substrate.
Guide 4: Build a Complete Roof De-Icing System
A complete roof and gutter de-icing system requires compatible heating cable, mounting accessories and control components.
