If I can't find the perfect size, can I buy a longer in-pipe heating cable and then adjust its length directly?
Yes, you can!
However, please do not attempt to cut it. The in-pipe heating cable has very high waterproof sealing standards, and it requires professional tools and skills to do it correctly. Cutting the cable will render it useless.
A step-by-step guide helping you adjust the length of YeloDeer's Internal Self-regulating Heat Trace Cable easily and correctly.
Tools You May Need:
● A pipe wrench, strap wrench, or channel lock
● PTFE tape
Step 1: Loosen the Compression Nut
Use a wrench or channel lock to loosen brass nut. (This nut applies pressure to keep the cable secure in the pipe.)
Step 2: Adjust the Cable Length
Slide the grommet along the cable to shorten it to the desired length inside the pipe. This step adjusts how much of the heating cable remains in the pipe.
Step 3: Tighten the Nut
Hand-tighten the nut first, then use the wrench to further tighten it, ensuring they are tight. To ensure a tight seal and prevent leaks, you may wrap appropriate PTFE tape around the threads of the nuts.
Step 4: Handling and Precautions for Excess Heating Cable
The excess heating cable after adjustments can be neatly coiled and secured with nylon zip ties to ensure it doesn't get in the way.
It's important to note that the heating section of the cable outside the pipe will also generate heat, reaching temperatures up to 60℃ (140℉). Proper handling is necessary to prevent burns.
It is especially recommended to wrap insulation tape around the heating cable outside the pipe for sealing and insulation, which will reduce heating power in that section and help save energy.
