I plan to use this in conjuction with MAXKOSKO green heat trace, which has power output from 5 to 8 W/ft. Heat trace and pipe would be in 1/2" thick fiberglass insulation. Pipe and insulation would also be covered by 4 to 6 inches of cellulose (blown in) insulation.

For your application, it’s important to note that the thermostat's sensor must be attached directly to the pipe at a cold spot. This allows it to monitor the temperature accurately and operate effectively. In other words, the sensor should be placed inside your insulation, in contact with the coldest point of the pipe.
