Power & hours

Use total electrical input watts from the product label or specifications. For cable rated in W/ft, multiply W/ft by heated length in feet, excluding the cold lead. Include all units you want to calculate.

Count only hours with power on. Exclude time switched off by a thermostat or controller.

Using self-regulating heating cable?

This note is only for self-regulating cables. For other products, you can skip it.

Calculation basis: nominal power

Enter the total watts based on the cable’s published nominal rating. We use that value throughout your powered-on hours to estimate energy use.

Total watts = nominal W/ft × heated length in ft

Cable manufacturing tolerances

Actual output can differ from the nominal rating, even under the same reference conditions, because cables have manufacturing tolerances.

We do not apply an assumed tolerance percentage.

Conditions change actual power

  • Cable temperature and changes in the temperature of the heated pipe, water or other material.
  • Whether the cable is in water or exposed to air.
  • Insulation, installation and heat loss.

What this means: This is a nominal-power estimate. Actual energy use may be higher or lower as conditions change.

Self-regulating does not mean switched off. Count all powered-on hours, excluding time switched off by a separate thermostat or controller.
